Deng XiaoPing – The Man Who Opens China

Deng XiaoPing

Deng XiaoPing was born in 1904 in southern China. At the age of 16 he went to France to study. To support himself, he worked in a rubber factory outside Paris.

As he was unqualified, he worked as an unskilled laborer No. 4088. He joined the large army of underpaid foreign workers sticking together the parts of waterproof overshoes. Within weeks he left, earning the unenviable entry in his employment pass “Refuses to work; not to be rehired”

It was during those years that he became involved in Communism. Deng return to China in 1926. He witnesses the slaughtering of communist by Chiang Kai Shek. The years leading to the Long March in 1934 were brutal. During on of the internal witch hunts in the communist party, Deng was disgraced.

He was dismissed from his post. His second wife deserted him. His first wife died during child birth. One of his closest friend and collaborator was condemn to death and was executed by his party.

Deng won Mao TzeDong (Party Chairman) favor by building Mao’s secret 3rd line, a gigantic industrial redoubt whose crippling cost was in inverse proportion to its ultimate strategic value and rose to power.

He was ousted by Mao during the Cultural Revolution and was recalled by Mao and then toppled by Mao’s wife. The Gang of 4 was later overthrown and Deng XiaoPing became the new “Emperor”.

Though he was not holding any official position in the later stage of his life, he was still the paramount leader of the most populous nation of the world. Deng XiaoPing passed away on 19 February 1997 at the age of 92.

He has been credited with being the man who opens China’s door the rest of the world.
